What a glorious day! Bunky and I rode in from Baltimore to Dulles and met up with the Metro Airport Authority Special Ops Police. They had already set up where we were to stage and had everything mapped out. Another 8 PGR members including 3 on their first PGR ride arrived at the Rally point. We were joined by the family in a stretch Excursion. (You have not had a tailgunner until you have a Stretch SUV!)...
The Major was met in the terminal by his family and when escorted outside, he met the Patriot Guard Riders. We stood at attention and saluted the Major as befitting one of our own Heros as he walked the red carpet to the Limo. Smiles, cheers and a wonderful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner by the Major's Mother; Rita on her trumpet!
The Special Ops Police are absolutely phenomenal! They not only escorted us out the Airport Access Road, but kept any following traffic from passing us. Once at the end of their territory, they had the entire Toll Booth Plaza blocked for us, to allow us to merge directly over to the I495 exit. What an outstanding show of respect for the Major and his Family!
A little ride around the Washington Beltway with the remaining 4 MD bikes and our Limo to the family home completed our mission.
Major, you have a wonderful family. We thank you so much for inviting us to be part of such a happy event. We thank you for your service and your sacrifice, as well as the sacrifices your family has made. A very rich record of service to our Nation for sure.
We cannot thank you enough.
From me personally:
Somewhere about 5 miles down the Airport Access Road, I broke into a huge grin... It's still here and I think it's stuck. I can't tell you how good it feels to have the man you are honoring, ride in the Limo.
